Department of Forestry

Department of Forestry Educational CD-ROM

In this educational interactive CD-ROM, the Department of Forestry wanted to have a way to educate middle school students about how forests are planted, how they grow, how long it takes both hardwood and pine trees to grow, how they are harvested, and what wildlife thrives in each forest environment. The CD-ROM includes about 20 video clips and about 20 360 degree panoramic VR's as well as music and narration. This CD ROM is being mass produced and delivered to over a thousand schools in the Southeast United States.

If you have a broadband (fast) internet connection, click here to view this entire project in a web based broadband version. You will need Macromedia's Shockwave and Apple's QuickTime to view this.

Fort Lee Family Housing Units
Ft. Lee Family Housing Units, Petersburg, Virginia

HSMM developed an interactive CD ROM of family housing neighborhoods at the Ft. Lee Army base. HSMM photographed existing housing units, both exteriors and interiors, using QuickTime virtual reality and a digital camera. The images were imported in the computer and "stitched" together to create seamless tours of the neighborhoods and housing exteriors and interiors. Recruits can "tour" and select base housing via computer without having to be on site.

The CD is completely interactive, allowing the user to see an overall map of the base and available neighborhoods. Once a neighborhood is selected, a detailed view is displayed, along with the available homes. When the user selects a unit, a virtual reality tour begins, complete with a floor plan and room dimensions. Any and all information can be printed, including photographs of the units. A help screen and self-running demo makes this CD user-friendly.

NOTE: You will need to have Shockwave and QuickTime installed. It is also highly recommended that you have a fast internet connection (DSL, cable, T1).

MLK Bridge

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Bridge

This interactive CD-ROM was developed for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to help visualize the completed project and to show the different phases of construction.

Each construction phase is described using audio, graphics and text. A computer generated 3D model of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Bridge and the new roadway leading up to and away from the bridge were built. The 3D bridge and roadway were rendered to "photo-realistic" levels and superimposed onto actual photographs. This same technology was also applied to 360 degree panoramas that can be interactively controlled by the user.

The final product was delivered on CD-ROM as well as the Internet. To run the Internet version of this interactive demo, click here.

NOTE: You will need to have Shockwave and QuickTime installed. It is also highly recommended that you have a fast internet connection (DSL, cable, T1).
